Writing Tips For Your Wedding Thank You Cards

You’ve had the ceremony, danced at your reception, and opened  your gifts. You may have even gone on your honeymoon already! Now it’s time to send your wedding thank you cards!

Your wedding thank you notes are important because it tells your loved ones you received their gift and how much you appreciate their selection and their being there to share the day with you.

To help you get started, here are some basic guidelines for writing your wedding thank you cards.

  • Send out your wedding thank you cards as soon as possible. Many people send gifts before the wedding and opening the gifts and  sending your wedding thank you card before the ceremony is perfectly appropriate.
  • Always refer directly to the gift that was given. “The slow cooker is sure to make preparing all those delicious meals much easier!” is much more personal and conveys your gratitude much better than, “Thank you for the thoughtful gift.”
  • Always address the wedding thank you card to the person who signed the card for the gift.
  • Use appropriate salutations for the recipients. If you grew up calling your parents’ friends “Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,” don’t address them by their first names in their wedding thank you note. Likewise, if the wedding thank you note  is to  a friend, don’t address them as “Mr.” or “Ms.”
  • Keep it personal - handwrite your wedding thank you notes.
  • Do mention monetary gifts as being ‘generous’ and maybe make mention of how   gift will be used. However, do not mention the monetary amount.
  • Send your wedding thank you cards as soon as possible.  Sending them later than 3 months after your wedding is considered to be poor taste.
  • Remember the whole family.  Even though John and Mary may have signed the card, and were the  ones who to attended your wedding, if they have children  include them in your message. i.e.“Sending thanks to Emily and Nathan”. just makes your wedding thank you notes so much more personal.
