Design and Wording – The Two Most Important Things In Your Wedding Invitations
When it comes time to prepare your wedding invitations, there is a lot to think about! But undoubtedly, the two most important things are the design and the wording. The design will be the first thing your guests see when they pull that beautiful stationery out of the envelope, and you want it to make a good impression. You also want to make a good impression with your words, telling your guests the important details in a clear manner, but in a way that is beautiful and eloquent as well.
Design and wording are the two elements of wedding invitations that couples struggle with the most, which can make it a frustrating process. But if you decide which type of wedding invitation you want, before you even think about design and wording, both will fall easily into place.
TYPE OF INVITATION |
DESIGN |
WORDING |
Formal Wedding Invitations |
Formal invitations generally use fancy script text with ribbons and other embellishments throughout. The color used is generally limited to black text on a white background, although often the wedding colors are also incorporated into the design of a formal wedding invitation. |
Wording should be kept very formal, with full names and dates fully spelled out. The only exception is made for numbers e.g. 100, which can be printed out numerically. |
Modern Wedding Invitations |
Design is really anyone’s game when it comes to modern invitations. Whether you want octagonal-shaped invitations, bold fuchsia-colored wedding invitations, or invitations that come with all the bells and whistles, you really can have whatever you want when you choose modern wedding invitations. These invitations can also include only one envelope, or they can be self-mailing, which fold in on themselves to create an envelope. |
You can generally word your modern wedding invitations however you want as well. You don’t need to worry about spelling out names and dates but still keep general etiquette in mind and remember to be considerate and respectful. |
Traditional Wedding Invitations |
The terms traditional and formal wedding invitations are often used interchangeably, but modern invitations can also hold a formal feel. If you plan to have traditional invitations however, plan to do it by the book. Center all text, make sure it is only black text on a white background, and make sure that two envelopes are included with the invitation. |
All words need to be fully spelled out, including dates and names. There is also a very specific order of the bride’s parents names being stated first, then the parents of the groom, and then the name of the couple. |
Custom Wedding Invitations |
Just like modern invitations, the world is your oyster when you choose custom wedding invitations. Be bold with shapes, color, design, and overall theme with your invitations! And don’t think that you need to stick to paper invites either. Plastic surfboards or pieces of metal with your names, times, and dates etched onto them can make for great custom wedding invitations! And when you’re getting all caught up with design, don’t forget about the envelope – you’ll have to design that too! |
The most important thing about wording when it comes to custom invitations is that it has to be yours! Do not be tempted to use a traditional template or word that you’ve seen on dozens of invites before. Make it yours, and make it unique – that’s what customization is all about! |
Design and wording are definitely the two main, and the two most challenging, elements of any wedding invitation, no matter which type you choose. But remember it’s worth the effort and time that you’re putting into them now. Not only will they be your guests’ first impression of your wedding, they’ll also be part of your treasured wedding memories for a lifetime to come!
